Sue Williams Appointed as Willetton Tigers NBL1 Women’s Head Coach

The Willetton Tigers are proud to announce the appointment of Sue Williams as the new Head Coach of the NBL1 Women’s team, marking the beginning of an exciting new era for the club’s elite women’s program.

A true Tiger through and through, Sue’s connection to the Willetton Basketball Association runs deep. Having begun her basketball journey as a junior with the Tigers, she went on to play an incredible 512 SBL games, winning multiple championships and establishing herself as one of the club’s most respected figures. Since retiring as a player, Sue has devoted her time to developing the next generation of talent, from guiding Willetton’s WABL juniors to leading WA State Teams at national championships.

Over the past decade, Sue has built an impressive coaching résumé across state and development programs. Most recently, she has served as Head Coach of the WA Under 16 Girls (2022–2025), leading the team at the Australian Junior Championships and instilling in her athletes a culture of discipline, resilience, and confidence. In 2024, she also took part in the NBA Basketball Without Borders Asia Camp, working alongside world-class coaches including Cynthia Cooper, Marty Clarke, and Terry Porter, and earlier this year, attended the National Performance Program Camp at the AIS, further strengthening her experience at the national level.

Willetton Basketball CEO Mark Winnett said Sue’s appointment followed a comprehensive recruitment process and reflected both her coaching pedigree and her deep connection to the club.

“Following a highly competitive recruitment and interview process, the interview panel was unanimous that Sue emerged as the standout candidate for the role,” Winnett said.
“Her compelling vision and deep passion for the Willetton women’s program, combined with a distinguished 25-year coaching career, primarily within Willetton WABL and Basketball WA State Programs, have laid a strong foundation for her transition into the NBL1 Head Coach role. We are thrilled to provide Sue with the opportunity to lead our successful women’s program into an exciting new era for the club.”

Sue said she was honoured to take on the position and eager to continue building upon the program’s proud legacy.

“I am extremely honoured to be given the opportunity to join the Willetton Tigers Women’s Program,” she said.
“It has such a strong history of success, and I am excited to continue to build on this already strong and successful program.

I am extremely excited to get started; I can’t wait to meet with the athletes and start working towards the 2026 season. I am committed to working together with them to develop an exciting and competitive style of play that our club and community will enjoy, and that our younger players will strive to be a part of.”

Sue’s appointment highlights the strength of Willetton Basketball’s coaching pathways, which provide opportunities for players and coaches to progress through the club’s development system. Having advanced from her early days as a junior to now leading the NBL1 Women’s program, Sue’s journey reflects the club’s commitment to fostering growth and continuity within its coaching ranks.

The Willetton Tigers congratulate Sue on her appointment and look forward to seeing her lead the NBL1 Women’s program into a new chapter of success.
